The government has declared Páirc Náisiënta na Mara, Ciarraí, to be Ireland’s first maritime national park. It is located on the Corca Dhuibhne peninsula in west Kerry. Covering more than 70,000 acres on land and sea, it is now the largest national park in the country and includes the iconic Conor Pass, Mount Brandon, Inch Beach, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sceilig Mhichíl.

Some Key Sites within the New Marine National Park?

The new marine national park incorporates various habitats, from pristine rivers to sand dunes, salt marshes, sea cliffs, and limestone reefs. It hosts a wide range of species, including salmon, freshwater pearl mussels, natterjack toads, basking sharks, and gannets. The government acquired 1,400 acres of land and forestry near Conor Pass for €6 million, a purchase hailed as good value for money.

Speaking on World Earth Day, Minister of State for Nature Malcolm Noonan described the park as a significant gift to Ireland and nature, emphasising the need for sustainable management plans. Engagement with local communities and other stakeholders will be crucial in developing a collaborative approach to conservation, tourism, and responsible land use.
