Prison Education & Training Initiative

The Irish government has announced a Prison Education & Training initiative to equip prisoners nearing release with valuable skills and increase their chances of finding employment upon reintegration into society. The prison education and training programs, spearheaded by the Prison Education Taskforce, will offer apprenticeships in two key areas: catering and building retrofitting.

Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris stated that education and training enable individuals to explore different options. The program aims to equip soon-to-be-released individuals with the essential skills and training to engage in the workforce actively.

The first program will commence at Midlands Prison, marking a significant step towards the Task Force’s goal of aligning prison education with the broader education system. To give prisoners the skills they need to secure long-term occupations after being released from jail, the Irish jail Service, SOLAS, the Probation Service, and the Education and Training Boards are collaborating.

Minister Harris mentioned that these courses would provide the necessary skills to obtain stable employment upon release and produce skilled labourers to contribute to the Housing for All initiative. Their conviction in the transformational potential of education and training is demonstrated by the government’s push for prisoner education.

Minister Harris emphasised the transformative power of education and training for imprisoned individuals. He noted that education and training can help inmates envision a different future and provide them with the tools to escape criminal activities.

He stressed the importance of an employment-focused approach to education in prisons, as it can equip inmates with the skills and knowledge needed to secure a job and reintegrate into society upon release.

This new government prison employment program offers a promising path forward for prisoners in Ireland, empowering them with the tools they need to successfully build a brighter future for themselves and contribute positively to their communities.
