Four Irish Nationals Aboard Singapore Airlines Flight That Faced Severe Turbulence During Flight

Severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean caused a Singapore Airlines flight to plummet 6,000 feet in minutes, resulting in the death of a British passenger and injuries to dozens. The Boeing 777, en route from London to Singapore, was diverted to Bangkok amidst stormy weather.

Severe Turbulence on Singapore Airlines Flight Causes Chaos and Injuries

The turbulence struck as passengers were served food, causing chaos in the cabin. Andrew Davies, a British passenger, described seeing injured crew members and passengers. “Every single cabin crew person I saw was injured in some way or another,” he stated to media. Another passenger, Dzafran Azmir, recounted how people hit their heads on overhead bins, causing significant damage.

The 73-year-old British man, who may have suffered a heart attack, was among those severely affected. Medical authorities have yet to confirm the cause of death. Nine members of the crew and 23 passengers also suffered moderate injuries, while seven passengers suffered severe injuries. Fourteen were treated at the airport, and sixteen were admitted to the hospital.

Flight data from FlightRadar24 revealed the Boeing 777-300ER’s sudden descent from 37,000 to 31,000 feet over the Andaman Sea. The aircraft sent an emergency signal before safely landing in Bangkok. 

Singapore Airlines confirmed that 143 passengers continued to Singapore, while others awaited a relief flight. The incident underscores the dangers of clear air turbulence, which can occur without warning, causing significant injury and distress.
