Taoiseach Simon Harris will head to Paris this morning to partake in a series of high-profile engagements surrounding the Paris Olympics events. Harris is set to meet members of Team Ireland at the Olympic Village, where he will express gratitude to the athletes’ families and support teams for their pivotal roles in reaching the pinnacle of their sport.

This year’s Olympics mark the centenary since Paris last hosted the games and the first time Ireland has competed as an independent nation in a century. A significant 133 Irish athletes are set to compete, with an estimated 25,000 spectators from Ireland expected to cheer them on.

Harris to Attend Paris Olympics Events and Global Summit on Sports and Sustainability at the Louvre

In addition to meeting athletes, Harris will attend a summit of world leaders and dignitaries at the Louvre, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach. The summit, part of the Paris 2024 festivities, will address sport’s contribution to sustainable development goals, with support from the French development agency, Agence française de développement.

The opening ceremony, scheduled for tomorrow evening along the River Seine, promises to captivate a global audience of hundreds of millions. Harris and his wife, Caoimhe, will also join another leaders’ meeting at the Elysee Palace, continuing their diplomatic engagements throughout the visit.
