Nestled on Mary’s Lane, the old red brick structure has been empty since it was closed in 2019 for renovation. Richard Shakespeare, the CEO of Dublin City Council, made the official announcement on Thursday that the market will reopen in August 2026.

Originally slated for completion in 2021, the refurbishment faced setbacks, primarily due to changes in the tendering process. Over the years, the once-majestic structure fell prey to vandalism and antisocial behaviour, prompting concerns about its preservation.

Restoring Dublin’s Victorian Fruit and Veg Market

Mr Shakespeare envisions the market as a vibrant hub, echoing the charm of Dublin while rivalling the renowned English markets in Cork. He emphasises a commitment to extended operating hours, from 10 am to 10 pm, to accommodate diverse schedules.

Gary Gannon, Social Democrats TD for Dublin Central, hails the reopening as transformative for the city’s northside, urging public control to ensure affordability and community benefit.

The revamped market, spanning four times the size of Cork’s English Market, promises a blend of retail and dining experiences. Despite delays related to structural issues and operator appointments, anticipation remains high for this cherished landmark’s revival.

With its rich history dating back to 1892, the market stands as a testament to Dublin’s culinary heritage. As plans unfold, residents eagerly anticipate the market’s return, poised to breathe new life into the vibrant Dublin 7 neighbourhood.
