Former DUP leader Jeffery Donaldson faces sexual offences charges

Former DUP leader Jeffery Donaldson appeared in court in Newry, Co Down, facing charges of 11 historical sexual offences. Nine counts of indecently attacking a female, one count of rape, and one offense of gross indecency with a child are among them.

Former DUP leader Jeffery Donaldson faces 11 sexual offences including rape

 The alleged offences involve two victims and took place over a 21-year period from 1985 to 2006. Donaldson’s wife, Eleanor, also faced charges, including aiding and abetting. Both denied all charges in court.

Despite the high-profile nature of the case, courtroom access was limited to 13 journalists, with an additional 25 observing via video link. A large police presence was noted due to the public’s interest in the case and the day’s other court matters. 

After his arrest, Donaldson was suspended from the DUP and had to quit from the party. He has represented Lagan Valley as an independent MP since 1997. The couple was released on bail of £350 each, with specific conditions .
