Funerary Procession to Be Held for Iran’s Late President Ebrahim Raisi

Iranians will assemble in Tabriz, the provincial capital of East Azerbaijan, to pay their respects to Iran’s Late President Ebrahim Raisi, who passed away tragically in a helicopter accident. The helicopter lost communication while returning to Tabriz after Raisi attended a dam inauguration with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.

A massive search and rescue operation was launched when communication was lost, but state TV confirmed Raisi’s death early yesterday. Security guards, regional authorities from East Azerbaijan, and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian all perished in the disaster.

Five days of national mourning were proclaimed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who also named Vice President Muhammad Mokhber as acting president. The presidential election is scheduled for June 28.

Thousands gathered in Tehran’s Valiasr Square to honour Raisi, whose body will travel through Qom to Tehran for a farewell ceremony led by Khamenei. Raisi will be buried in Mashhad, his hometown, on Thursday. Condolences have poured in from international allies amidst heightened Middle East tensions.
