What makes Newport Town special?

Rockfleet Castle, believed to be the final resting place of the infamous Irish pirate queen Grace O’Malley, and the Burrishoole Friary, founded in 1470, speak to Newport’s religious and historical importance. Yet, the town’s most celebrated figure is undoubtedly Grace Kelly. 

Born in Philadelphia, the Hollywood star turned Princess of Monaco had deep Irish roots in Newport town. Her grandfather, John Kelly, left the town in 1887 for a new life in the United States, eventually establishing a successful construction company in Philadelphia. Grace, who purchased her ancestral house in 1976, visited Newport multiple times, creating a lasting connection. 

In 2023, a statue in her honour was unveiled near the town, attended by her son, Prince Albert of Monaco. Despite the Kelly homestead being in ruins, it remains a pilgrimage site for tourists seeking a glimpse into the origins of a 1950s movie icon.

Beyond its historical allure, Newport offers a blend of modern activities, making it an ideal tourist destination. The town’s proximity to the Gold Tier International Dark-Sky Park makes it a haven for stargazers. The absence of light pollution allows the night sky to come alive, offering star safaris, astrophotography workshops, and moonlit hikes. 

With lots of sea, lake, and river fishing, Newport is an angler’s paradise. Water enthusiasts can indulge in stand-up paddling, kayaking, and water zorbing in Clew Bay, while sea safaris provide a breathtaking journey through the region’s scenic wonders. 

For those preferring to stay on land, Newport’s natural landscape offers a playground for hikers and cyclists. The challenging Western Way and Bangor Trail reward adventurers with stunning views. While the 26-mile Great Western Greenway provides a traffic-free cycling route. And it allows the riders to savour the countryside’s beauty.
