Route changes being considered for the Dublin Marathon 2024

The Dublin Marathon

The Dublin Marathon, an iconic event in the city’s annual calendar, is at a crossroads as organisers and the Dublin City Council seek alternative routes for the 2024 edition. The decision follows criticism from the National Transport Authority (NTA) regarding the “disproportionate adverse impact” the marathon has on public transport services.

Traditionally commencing at Fitzwilliam Square and concluding at Merrion Square, the Dublin marathon route has been a subject of contention due to the extensive road closures required for the start/finish area in Merrion Square North. The NTA voiced concerns over the disruption caused to public transport in the area, prompting discussions on the feasibility of relocating the event outside the city centre.

In a joint statement, Dublin City Council and the Dublin marathon organisers acknowledged the need for a collaborative effort to address the challenges posed by the race’s growth in scale and popularity. They emphasised their commitment to delivering the event in a “safe and sustainable manner” while ensuring minimal disruption to the daily functioning of the city.

The statement underlined the ongoing partnership between the council and the marathon organisers, stating, “Dublin City Council and the organisers of the Dublin Marathon have for many years worked in partnership together to deliver this important event to the city.” However, it also recognised the evolving nature of the event and its infrastructure requirements.

Efforts are underway to explore alternative routes for the 2024 Dublin Marathon, with a preference for a city-centre location that will continue to showcase the vibrant spirit of Dublin. The organisers aim to strike a balance between providing an exceptional experience for participants, attendees, and spectators while minimising inconvenience to the general public.

Merrion Square North, the current site for the start/finish area, is under reconsideration for future marathons. The joint statement assured that discussions between Dublin City Council and the marathon organisers are in progress, with the goal of reaching a positive solution. An announcement on the chosen route is expected in the first quarter of 2024.

As the city anticipates the outcome of these deliberations, the Dublin Marathon remains a symbol of resilience and community spirit, navigating challenges to ensure its continued success as a hallmark event in the heart of Dublin.
