Contributions of the Parsons family
The grounds of the castle served as a canvas on which photographer Mary Parsons and her husband Parsons explored the secrets of space. Between 1845 and 1914, scientists from all over the world came to Birr Castle as a pilgrimage destination after Parsons revealed the spiral pattern of galaxies from there. But the family’s greatest achievement came from their son Charles, who created the steam turbine after being influenced by their scientific background. This innovative invention catapulted Birr’s impact into the stratosphere by laying the groundwork for the contemporary jet engine.
Leviathan–restored telescope
The focal point of this research haven is the Leviathan, a telescope that used to draw astronomers from all over the world. Larger instruments took center stage in California after 1914, but a painstaking restoration effort gave the Leviathan a second lease on life in the 1990s.
Presently, the observatory is a prominent feature of Birr Castle Demesne, encircled by a Science Centre and Mary’s historic darkroom, which is among the oldest in Europe. The location provides an immersive experience, including interactive models, scientific equipment, and details on the restoration initiatives.
The beauty of the Birr castle
Birr Castle reveals itself as a huge expanse of natural beauty beyond the scientific marvels. The 120 acres of verdant woodland, riverbank walks, peaceful lake, and an abundance of flora and fauna entice guests to discover the marvels of nature. Birr Castle is still inhabited by the Parsons family and the 7th Earl of Rosse, but it is open for tours during certain seasons. Originally built as a Norman stronghold in 1170, the castle celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2021 by allowing visitors to explore science and time travel within its illustrious walls.
