Irish Govt Commits to €600m For Derry to Donegal Road Upgrade
The road upgrade of the A5 between Derry and Donegal, which has been long-awaited, is finally progressing after facing several delays and legal challenges. The Irish government has committed €600 million to the project, with construction expected to begin before the end of 2024.

The announcement has been met with relief and excitement from businesses, politicians, and road safety campaigners across the region. The current A5 has been dubbed “one of the most dangerous roads on the island,” with nearly 50 people losing their lives since 2007.

Anna Doherty, CEO of the Derry Chamber of Commerce, said, “The dualling of the A5 will also greatly increase connectivity between the northwest and Dublin, helping to drive inward investment and ensure regional balance.”
The upgrade is expected to bring imperative benefits beyond road safety. Businesses across Derry, Donegal, and Tyrone hailed the project as a catalyst for economic growth and improved connectivity with Dublin. They anticipate increased investment and job creation opportunities.

While economic benefits are important, the primary focus remains on saving lives. Politicians across the political spectrum have emphasised the need to prioritise safety. SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said, “No one should be put at risk through using the A5.”
