The announcement has been met with relief and excitement from businesses, politicians, and road safety campaigners across the region. The current A5 has been dubbed “one of the most dangerous roads on the island,” with nearly 50 people losing their lives since 2007.

The Donegal to Dublin road upgrade will transform the single-carriageway into a dual-carriageway, significantly reducing travel times and improving safety. It is anticipated that by drawing investments and creating jobs, this action will boost economic growth in the northwest.

Irish Government Takes Lead on road upgrade, Funding Challenges Remain

The Irish government’s renewed commitment comes after years of uncertainty surrounding the project’s funding. While initially pledging €468 million, that figure was reduced during the financial crisis. However, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s recent announcement marks a significant turnaround, with the €600 million injection providing the green light for construction.

While the €600 million commitment is a major step forward, additional funding is still needed from the Northern Ireland Executive and the UK government. Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd welcomed the news, acknowledging remaining challenges but expressing confidence that work will begin this year. He focused on finalising legal issues and ensuring a smooth construction process.

Campaigners Celebrate, Urge End to Legal Objections

Road safety campaigners who have tirelessly advocated for the upgrade have met the news with jubilation. Niall McKenna of the “Enough is Enough” campaign group urged those behind legal challenges to reconsider. They highlighted the tragic toll the road has taken on families and communities, emphasising the urgency of road maintenance plans.

Economic and Safety Benefits Highlighted

Anna Doherty, CEO of the Derry Chamber of Commerce, said, “The dualling of the A5 will also greatly increase connectivity between the northwest and Dublin, helping to drive inward investment and ensure regional balance.”

The upgrade is expected to bring imperative benefits beyond road safety. Businesses across Derry, Donegal, and Tyrone hailed the project as a catalyst for economic growth and improved connectivity with Dublin. They anticipate increased investment and job creation opportunities.

Safety Remains Paramount

While economic benefits are important, the primary focus remains on saving lives. Politicians across the political spectrum have emphasised the need to prioritise safety. SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said, “No one should be put at risk through using the A5.”

Despite the years of delays, the recent Ministerial announcement on road upgrades offers hope for those who have long awaited the A5 upgrade. While challenges remain, the Irish government’s commitment and unwavering support from campaigners and businesses suggest that the long-awaited transformation of this vital road is finally within reach.
