Social Media Firms Must Act Quickly to Remove Threats, Says McEntee
Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has called for immediate action from social media firms to address and remove threats, emphasising that such content should be taken seriously. Her remarks follow a concerning incident where a threat against Taoiseach Simon Harris and his family remained on Instagram for two days despite Gardaí’s request for its removal.

McEntee Calls for Stronger Action from Social Media Firms
McEntee described the threat as “absolutely appalling,” particularly given its inclusion of Harris’s wife and children. She emphasised that threats made on the internet are no less severe than those made in person and should be taken seriously.
Meta, the owner of Instagram, has since removed the offending content and is investigating. McEntee criticised the era of self-regulation by social media platforms, noting that Ireland now has an Online Safety Commissioner to ensure compliance and enforce penalties for violations.
Additionally, McEntee highlighted the role of Coimisiún na Meán, which will finalize a new code of practice by year-end. She also indicated upcoming legislation to ban mask-wearing at protests to ensure accountability and prevent intimidation.
