No Immediate Layoffs at Viatris’ Cork Plant; Reductions to Start in 2028
Despite the lengthy timeline, there will be no immediate layoffs. The company anticipates maintaining the majority of its workforce throughout the closure period, with staff reductions expected to commence around mid-2028, concluding by December. This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation revealing that the site is no longer viable due to “challenging market dynamics” and requires significant investment to remain operational.
Staff were informed of the decision in a meeting earlier today, and a consultation process involving workers and their representatives will begin shortly. Viatris has committed to working with unions to develop a fair redundancy plan, which will likely include severance packages, healthcare continuation, career counselling, and support through the Employee Assistance Program.
The company expressed gratitude for the dedication of its Little Island employees and emphasised that this decision will not affect its substantial presence in Ireland, where it continues to operate other facilities in Galway, Dublin, and Damastown.
