Waterford goes on NYT’s ’52 Places to Go’ 2024 list

With its rich history and abundance of natural resources, Waterford, a Viking city, has successfully gained a place on the esteemed New York Times “52 Places to Go” list for 2024. This recognition comes as no surprise to us, as we The New York Times lauded Waterford for its captivating blend of historical sites and breathtaking natural landscapes. 

What Waterford has to offer to it’s visitors?

Among the city’s historical gems are the Viking Triangle, Reginald’s Tower, and a myriad of museums that cater to history enthusiasts. However, the spotlight also shone on Waterford’s scenic coastline and natural amenities.

Travel expert AnneLise Sorensen stated that Waterford’s natural richness is equal to its historical ones, particularly the Copper Coast, which is surrounded by high cliffs and scalloped coves. It is a site worth visiting. The Greenway, a nearly 30-mile route tracing an abandoned rail line, includes the Copper Coast as a crucial component.

After exploring the Greenway, Sorensen suggests finishing off with afternoon tea in the verdant environs of Mount Congreve Gardens. Mount Congreve Gardens had a multimillion-dollar renovation and reopened in 2023.

Waterford’s inclusion on the New York Times’ list is not the only accolade the city has received. Condé Nast Traveler could not let Waterford be overlooked when listing the Best Places to Visit in the UK and Ireland for 2024. 

Travel journalist Aoife O’Riordain emphasised the recently renovated Mount Congreve House with its stunning view of the River Suir. O’Riordain suggests staying at Mount Congreve’s fairy-tale gate lodge, available for rent, to enjoy the serene gardens after the gates close. The Waterford Greenway, which runs along the edge of the Mount Congreve estate, was also acknowledged.

Additionally, O’Riordain recommended planning ahead for a delightful lunch experience at Beach House in Tramore, an airy Victorian dining room known for its perfectly pitched, seafood-centric menus that change with the tides. 

It’s inclusion in these esteemed lists not only showcases its historical significance but also underscores the city’s commitment to preserving and enhancing its natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination for travellers seeking a perfect blend of history and scenic wonders in 2024.
